NEWS: ‘Seitan’ has nothing to do with ‘Satan’

Some unusual news from LoveSeitan HQ today… we’ve come under fire on Twitter for ‘seitan’ sounding too similar to ‘Satan’. Funnily enough, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this kind of tweet. Here’s what we got on our feed earlier this week:

We’ve decided not to share the name of the account behind this tweet as that’s not really our style. Instead, we wanted to take this opportunity to put the issue to bed and remind everyone that seitan has nothing to do with the devil/Satan, or any demons or anything like that.

To begin with, here’s a quote from our Co-Founder, Steve Swindon:

“This is a good opportunity to remind people that ‘seitan’ has nothing to do with ‘Satan’. Seitan was invented by Buddhist monks in the 6th century, over 1500 years ago. The word ‘seitan’ is actually a Japanese word that literally translates to ‘proper protein’. It’s a wonderful vegan food that is high in protein and certainly not related to evil. We have customers from all faiths and backgrounds; if anyone ever wants further information on this, they are more than welcome to message, email or tweet us. We’ll also be happy to direct them to our blog post which explains the origins of seitan.”

For anyone wondering, that blog post is available here.

To get additional insight, we also spoke to Rev. Marc Wolverson of St James Church, Leyland (Lancashire), who has given us a quote below.

He said: “I can assure my fellow Christians, and anyone else of faith, that ‘seitan’ has nothing to do with ‘Satan’ or evil in any sense. As the team at LoveSeitan has pointed out, ‘seitan’ is a Japanese word that means ‘proper protein’. As a priest and a seitan consumer, I promise there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to seitan. It’s certainly a delicious product that’s compatible with all faiths.”

So there you have it! We sincerely hope this puts the issue to rest. Seitan really doesn’t haven’t anything to do with Satan. It’s just a wonderful, healthy, tasty, accessible and sustainable food. We are very pleased to see seitan has proven to be the perfect choice for vegans searching for a meat alternative in recent years, and is surging up the ranks of the most popular vegan meats in Europe. Vegans, vegetarians, flexitarians and meat-eaters alike are becoming seitan fans thanks to its satisfying texture and healthy ingredients.

And as a reminder, all our products are made with healthy and tasty nourishment in mind.
